Ugh, we totally get it. Gross salesy tactics are so 2001.
And none of us wants to be lumped in with “that.” It’s so #2000anddone.
But really, let’s look at this from a bird’s eye view.
The reason entrepreneurs and coaches feel stressed and yucky when it comes to sales is they were probably taken advantage of at some point and they want to be better than that.
They don’t want to make someone else feel the way they did. I mean, if we could just take the “sales” part out of our business, it would be perfect, right?
We’ve heard so many new coaches say, “I just want to help people. I don’t want to have to do sales and marketing.”
We get it. It would be nice to just walk into a fully-formed business and just do your thing. There’s actually options for you to do that, and it’s called working for someone else.
I know, it may sound harsh, but can we just let go of the thought that there is anything wrong with you/ the world/ the industry/ your business because you feel this way. Can you be open to seeing the value in these feelings and play a little bit with us?
Let’s reframe this so you can see that you are the creator and this is meant to be fun!
“I don’t want to do x, y, z….”
I don’t want to be “salesy”
Totally. We want people to know, like, and trust us, and then buy from us because they believe in us. We don’t want to feel like snake-oil salespeople or trick anyone into something that won’t be good for them. And we certainly don’t want to feel scarcity creeping in while we wait for a potential client’s answer. So, how about you just have a really powerful conversation with someone? How about you have lots of really powerful conversations with lots of someones?
You know when you’re at a gathering like a party or social gathering or having a blast with someone you connect with immediately and you’re just “on?” You’re in flow, having a great time, and really enjoying the conversations you’re having. Maybe you’re even in flirty energy! You’re listening intently, and really dropping in with the person you’re talking with. That’s it, that’s the energy signature you can hold when you’re having a powerful conversation– nothing to lose from being present, just being turned on to life and being fully “you.”
Decide to be generous. Maybe you schedule a 90 minute call to chat with a potential new client or someone who wants to know more about what you do, or you’re catching up with a colleague. You never know where or how a client will come your way, because these conversations can and often do lead to referrals or a client will come back around years later once they are ready. You just never know, so when you are in a meeting with them, pack a punch.
We teach our AETHERIA Coach Certification students about how to do goal setting sessions with clients, to help them channel a vision for their future, and help them create a plan of action to be truly diligent with their growth. This includes using a tool or technique (or three!) to help lock in a vision and put it in their future so that their subconscious is set to make it happen.
Whatever it is, dedicate that block of time to changing the world by having the type of conversation that can really help that one person. Whether they hire you right then or not, you’re putting so much good into the world and you’re being part of the solution rather than the problem.
Have you ever brought in a client and realized you weren’t charging NEARLY enough? Have you signed a client and they seemingly dropped off the face of the earth when it was time to do the work? Or, have you told someone your rates and they said they couldn’t pay that much and then you both walked away from the conversation deflated?
It’s okay. It happens. It’s happened to us! We want to share with you way too much information for a blog post you have free access to, because our “free” is GOLD.
At the end of a powerful conversation or dream session, you can talk about next steps with someone. You can ask them if they would like to know more about working with you or if they would want to refer someone else to you. You can ask them if they would like to gift a dream session with you to a friend or colleague!
If they say yes, you can let them know what your full rate is. Because you know a good deal of information as to where they are at, you can let them know that you never want the full rate to prevent you from working with aligned clients, and if you’re feeling excited to work with them, you can close out the session by asking them to come back to you in the next few days with a number that they would feel has them “all in” to do the work, and is fair to you for your time and effort.
For both the service provider and the client, there’s already co-creation, trust, and respect, as well as understanding and care. If the potential client comes back to you with a maximum number and honestly feels stretched by it, see what you can do so that you feel good about it– maybe give them access to some pre recorded content you’ve already created, and make the calls shorter or reduce the number of calls per month. Trust your intuition here, and we promise, both you and your client will be happy with the way the exchange happens because everyone is being honored.
