Have you ever set a goal and found yourself not hitting that goal month after month?
Maybe you’ve invested in all kinds of trainings, certifications, self-development, mentors and healing, yet still find yourself unable to manifest what you really want.
Maybe you’ve even said something like “I feel like something is blocking me and I just don’t know what it is.”
Frustrating, and deflating, to say the least.
In the book The Big Leap, the author Gay Hendricks teaches that we all have an “upper limit” of what we believe is possible and probable for us.
The example he uses to illustrate this is lottery winners. They usually return back to their previous net worth or below within a couple of years of winning all that money.
Gay Hendricks says that this is because each of us has an inner thermostat setting that determines how much love, success and creativity we allow ourselves to enjoy. This thermostat gets programmed in the first 0-7 years of our lives as does most of our programming.
So think what your life was like when you were seven and younger. What were your parents / caretakers navigating in their lives? What were they struggling with? What were they saying out loud or simply thinking? What was going on in the world at the time?
All of the thoughts and statements you were exposed to, whether they were about you or not, got transcribed in your mind as being about YOU. At that point in your life you were incredibly impressionable– you were passively accepting and saving all that data and applying it to your sense of self and how to safely navigate the world.
This is the point where reality hits that none of us had “perfect childhoods,” and we all have some programming to update in our adulthood if we want what we’ve never had.
Let’s go a little deeper and apply this to your life:
You may have had a parent struggling to make ends meet, and perhaps you are noticing a similar pattern running in your business. Maybe someone in your life felt unworthy in some way, and you find it hard to feel like you deserve something that you want. We see stories like this all the time with our clients (and ourselves!).
Do you see how this can have a direct impact on your ability to hit a goal? Because the goal is on the other side of the threshold you’re standing at. You now have to choose new programming in order to cross it.
Think of it like this: You’ve always solved a problem in a certain way and your subconscious mind and ego are perfectly fine with things staying that way, because all your subconscious mind cares about is you being safe. But you don’t want to just be safe, you want more! And you deserve whatever you are feeling called to.
It may seem too good to be true, but it’s pretty simple and painless to reprogram subconscious beliefs. Think of it as a software update for your mind.
Brings new meaning to Thomas Jefferson’s famous quote, “If you want something you’ve never had, you’ve got to do something you’ve never done,” doesn’t it?
Take some time to answer these questions to elicit some of your programming and decide if it’s time for an upgrade:
- What am I currently struggling with and how does it relate to people/ situations/ events in the first seven years of my life?
- What is the thing that I want that never seems to come to fruition? Did I have an example of it in my childhood?
- What’s a limiting belief I tell myself often that stops me from what I want and when did I first think it?
With love,
